What’s not to love? These, are my ultimate tuna tacos with fish taco sauce…

Easiest taco’s you’ll ever make

From start to finish these tuna tacos take about 10 minutes and yes that includes the prep. There is actually no cooking involved unless you count a tad tortilla microwave blasting.

I love cooking obviously. I wouldn’t start a food blog if I didn’t. However, sometimes no matter how much you love cooking, you just really can’t be bothered, and I’m sure you can agree with me on that.

It’s like, you really want the end product, that being the delicious food, but you just can’t find the motivation to do allll the prepping and allll the cooking.

Then you have the time’s that you’re well up for cooking but you simply don’t have the time. I think we’ve all been there; Busy day at work, had to get some cleaning done when you finished, love island starts at 9 and it’s already 8:30. You just need something quick to eat.

Well when those times come a-calling, don’t give in to the temptation for canned mac and cheese, no matter how delicious it is.

How these tuna tacos are made

To make these tuna tacos is a simple 4 step process.

Step 1: Cutting, chopping, and slicing your vegetables. Simple.

Step 2: Prepare your tuna. And when I say prepare I mean empty a can of tuna in a bowl and mix in some spices.

Step 3: Make the fish taco sauce. Sounds like a complicated ordeal right? wrong. It’s just a case of mixing some spice, with some mayo, and some sour cream. Couldn’t be easier.

Step 4: The last step is to heat up your taco tortillas which you can do on a dry pan if you really want to do some actual ‘cooking’ or just keep it simple and stick them in the microwave.

After that it’s just a case of assembling. Stand in front of your taco tuna, fish taco sauce, chopped veggies and heated mini tortillas. Shout the words “TUNA TACOS… ASSEMBLE” and your done.

Easy right? and see, I wasn’t lying when I said its super quick.

I’ve actually done the maths and it would take you the same amount as time to read this post and figure out whether you have the ingredients already in or whether you have to buy them then it would to make the actual tuna tacos.

Fish Taco Sauce

Fish taco sauce is just the fancy name for a sauce that goes really well with fish. And not just fish tacos, but any fish dish. And not just tuna but, you guessed it, any fish!

Usually, taco sauce will be made with a tomato base, this sauce is a white sauce, well, pinkish white sauce, that just helps add a bit of creaminess, spice, and citrus to balance out all that tuna and veggies.

The sauce consists of a mix of mayonnaise and sour cream, trust me, it works, which helps with the creaminess of the fish taco sauce. A little bit of sriracha to taste which adds that bite of spice. And finally, we have a little lime for acidity and some garlic powder for a little bit of garlicy goodness.

The fish tacos vegetable filling

So for the vegetable filling you can get as creative as you want. A good mix of crunchy and vibrant veggies always work best. I just love when you have all those pops of colours - the greens, the purples, they just look great together.

But it isn’t just about the look of them, even though it helps take a bloody tasty looking photo.

It’s all about that flavour baby. In the mix I recommend we have some cabbage which has an earthy flavour and helps give our tacos a nice crunch. Least we forget these are soft shell tacos so a little bit of crunch really helps give them some texture.

We also have red onion in the mix, which let’s face it, if you’ve made one of the recipes on this blog before, you would of seen coming. I bloody love red onions.

Avocado makes an appearance as well, can’t have Mexican cuisine night without avocado ay?

Finally we have some spring onions because we can never have enough onions and trust me, 2 types of onions with tuna is a match made in heaven.

The spiced tuna filling

When it comes to fish tacos, the popular types of fish we see are white fish like cod, then salmon which shows up every now and then, but the most popular has to be tilapia.

Tilapia is a fish that might just be the oldest farmed fish in the world and in the wild can be found in Egypt. fun fact of the day.

It’s great for fish tacos there is no denying that, and it sure shows up in Mexican cuisine time and time again. But tuna is something that is just really easy to work with and the texture of tuna mixed with that fish taco sauce just makes it the obvious choice.

Sure, you wouldn’t be happy if you went to a Mexican restaurant and the fish tacos were made with out of the can tuna. But it just tastes so damn delicious.

Recipe Variations

I’ve already mentioned a few variations you could make for these tuna tacos with fish taco sauce. But I do like to give it a whole section of it’s own.

Recipe variations is something I’m big on. I love when people take a recipe from this food blog and mix it up with there own preferences, and I love reading about it when you share your variations in the comments below.

I’m not one of these food bloggers that say “make it how I tell you that you should, blah blah blah I know better than you” That’s not my vibe. Please feel free to mix it up however you like.

In the section above about the spiced tuna filling, I mentioned other popular fish you could use which if you do want to elevate this recipe and have some more time on your hands, I’d suggest using cod with the exact same spice mix.

The only difference will be that instead of you mixing and filling, you’d cover the cod with the spice, then bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes, then fill.

If you want to make these tacos vegetarian;

If it’s vegetarian tacos you’re after, I’d cut some mushrooms and cook them in a frying pan with a bit of butter, then mix the same spice mix you was going to mix with the tuna with the mushrooms. Then you’ll have some earthy spiced mushrooms which would work great.

Cooking for more or less people;

Because these are so damn easy to make, they make the perfect party food. Obviously you’ll need more of the ingredients, just double, triple, or 5x the recipe till your happy. Then vice versa if you’re having them for one and don’t want 6 tacos for yourself. not like I can relate, i’d totally have 6 tacos by myself.

The beauty of them being cold means you’re in no rush to eat them. Just keep them covered and keep going back for tuna taco snacking.

Anyway, my point is, if you don’t want to do that, just half the recipe.

You need a taco Stand

Okay, so maybe you don’t need a taco stand. But it sure will help.

Every single time I make tacos I always wish I had a taco stand. especially with soft shell tacos because as I’m sure you can relate to, they look really pretty in your hand but as soon as you put it on the plate it flops open.

How a lot of people do it will serve it open so you can just fold it when eating. But like most people, I don’t have a plate big enough for all the tacos I’d be munching on.

Another thing people tend to do will serve them separate, so you can assemble the tacos individually as your eating.

Which yeah, is great when you really want to get involved. But if I’m honest, I just want to sit on my sofa binge-watching Netflix whilst gobbling taco after taco. Assembling as I go gets in the way of my constant munching and I always end up getting the ratio wrong. First few will be packed with tuna and by the end ones it’ll just be veggies.

So, a taco stand. I’m going to order one because it will make assembling tacos quicker and easier, it’ll keep them together, and it will look great. Honestly, I just want to feel boujee eating my tacos at home from a taco stand.

If you’re keen as well, the good news is they are really cheap to buy, so here are a few good options for you.

  2. In a bowl, add your tuna and sprinkle over all the seasonings with a small splash of oil, use a spoon to mix together so all the tuna is flaked and coated.
  3. For the fish taco sauce, mix everything in the taco sauce section in another bowl and whisk till combined.
  4. Heat up your tortillas which you can do by putting them on a dry frying pan on high heat for around 1 minute on each side so they get some colour, or just stick them in a microwave for 1 minute.
  5. To assemble, hold your tacos or use your taco holder if you have one (it’s well worth it) and first add 2 large teaspoons of your spiced tuna, then a few of your chopped fillings to taste, then spoon on your fish taco sauce or use a piping bag/squeezy bottle to distribute the sauce more evenly. Finally, sprinkle with some spring onions, cheddar, and squeeze over some lime.
