If you’ve been on a night out to any club or late night bar in Britain, chances are you’ve heard of the Skittle Bomb. Where this drink came from nobody knows. It’s the Jagerbomb for people who don’t like Jägermeister and it’s super simple to create with just 2 ingredients (Cointreau and Red bull).

What you get is a drink that tastes just like skittles - hence the name.

What drink tastes like Skittles?

The drink that tastes like skittles is the skittle bomb. Well, at least from an alcohol stand point.

At the end of the day a skittle is basically a sugary flavoured fruity sweet. So there are a lot of drinks that CAN taste like skittles. But from working in a bar I can tell you with absolute confidence that if anyone asks “what’s that drink that tastes like skittles?” they’re thinking of a skittle bomb.

There is some confusion on whether you can make a skittle bomb cocktail, or whether it’s meant to be shot. I can clear this up once and for all and tell you that the purpose of a Skittle bomb is indeed to be shot.

Ingredients wise it’s super simple. It’s exactly the same as a jagerbomb but instead of jager, we’re going to use cointreau.

So why does cointreau and redbull tastes like skittles? Redbull is full of sugar and citric acid, the same acid and sugar you’ll find in skittles. But skittles are fruit flavored, so once you add that with a shot of a sweet orange liqueur like Cointreau, what you get is something that tastes exactly like a skittle.

So let’s run through those 2 ingredients and substitutions you can make.

Cointreau

Cointreau is a premium French orange-flavored liqueur known for its clear and intense citrus taste. Created in the 19th century, it is made from a blend of sweet and bitter orange peels, resulting in a well-balanced and versatile spirit. The production process involves the careful distillation of orange peels, blending the resulting essence with alcohol, and then adding sugar to achieve a harmonious sweetness.

You’ll be familiar with Cointreau if you’re a fan of cocktails such as the Margarita, The White Lady, The Cosmopolitan, or the Breakfast Martini. As well as a bunch more classics.

Can you make a Skittle Bomb without Cointreau?

Yes, you can make a Skittle Bomb without Cointreau. Any orange liqueur will work the same, the most popular replacement being Triple Sec.

Red bull

Red Bull is a popular energy drink that originated in Austria and has gained worldwide recognition. Introduced in 1987 by Dietrich Mateschitz, Red Bull is characterized by its distinctive slim can and a unique blend of ingredients designed to provide a boost of energy and mental alertness. But you already know that, right?

Anyone who is googling a Skittle Bomb has probably had a Jagerbomb and as such is familiar with Red Bull.

Can you make a Skittle Bomb without Red bull?

Yes, you can make a Skittle Bomb without Red bull. Substitute the Red Bull for any energy drink and this will work the same.

What makes a drink a bomb?

A Bomb shot, or Bomb Drink is an alcoholic concoction where you take a shot of alcohol, this can be a spirit but usually will be a liqueur. Then drop that into a glass of chaser and drink the whole thing as quickly as possible.

The idea is that instead of the drink mixing in the glass, it mixes in your mouth.

How do you drink a bomb shot?

A bomb shot should be drank in one go as soon as the 2 ingredients touch each other.

Skittle Bomb Variations

Okay, let’s go over some variations because as simple as the Skittle Bomb is, there is quite a lot you can do with it. From swapping out the ingredients to turning it into a Skittle Bomb cocktail!

How do you make a skittle bomb without Cointreau?

We covered this in the Cointreau section but it’s a question a lot of people ask, so it’s worth going over again.

With Cointreau being an orange liqueur you could get away with swapping it entirely for another orange liqueur. The closest to the flavour and the one I’d recommend is Triple sec.

After that, you could get away with liqueurs like Grand Marnier and other orange brandy liqueurs.

I’ve also heard of people adding a dash of blackcurrant cordial to the Red Bull, which personally I haven’t tried but I hear it tastes even more like Skittles. If that’s even possible.

Skittle bomb cocktail

The Skittle Bomb cocktail is a variation a lot of people wonder about. And for good reason, bombs are not suppose to be tasty. It’s more about the experience then flavor.

Yet the Skittle Bomb is so damn tasty that a lot of people just think, “well, why can’t I just sip it

And you totally can! The easiest way to do this is just to combine both ingredients in a taller glass and fill it with ice.

Another Skittle Bomb cocktail variation that I find to be delicious is to add something sparkling. Try this recipe;

Ingredients:

  • 2 shot Cointreau

  • 3 shots Red Bull

  • 3 shots 7 Up or Sprite

method:

  1. Pour everything over ice in a tall glass and stir to combine.

  2. The whole thing tastes like a sparkly skittle. It’s a must-try.

Skittle infused vodka

Once you mention Skittle and alcohol, someone is going to wonder about skittle vodka. So let’s talk about that.

Skittle vodka is something that took of about 5 or so years a go. It’s a basic vodka infusion. You add skittles in your bottle of vodka, and after about 24 hours, the vodka will taste like skittles. So much so that it makes you wonder why you spend the extra 5% on flavored vodkas when you can just make them yourself.

Just take a look at this article about how you can science your way to homemade flavoured spirits and you’ll see how easy it is to make any flavoured drink you want.

However, with skittles also being filled with food dye, the vodka also picks that up. So whatever color Skittles you add is the color the vodka will turn. Which is why it became so popular really, not just because of the ease of it, but because it’s so vibrant.

How to Skittle Vodka

Here’s that all important Skittle vodka recipe:

  • Select your Skittle flavor of choice.

  • Drop them into a bottle of vodka and let it sit for at least 24 hours. Shake the bottle every few hours.

  • Strain out the Skittles, and voilà—customized Skittle-infused vodka!

Skittle Bomb Tips and Tricks

The main issue people come across with bomb shots, not just skittle bombs but any, is the breakage. Dropping glass into glass is a sure fire way to cause some smashed glass. I recommend picking up these bomber cups which are plastic an are made for these kind of drinks.

Skittle bomb percentage

The percentage or ABV of a skittle bomb is 10%.

That is based on if you were to use 1 ounce of Cointreau (which is 40%) and 3 ounces of Red Bull.
