Who Invented the Bloody Mary

The Bloody Mary, love it or hate it, it’s a classic through and through. The one thing about this cocktail that gets me is that its often a cocktail that’s been made so over complicated. The first Bloody Mary was thought to of originated in the 1920s at Harrys New York bar in Paris, that recipe called for just 4 Ingredients - Vodka, Tomato Juice, Tabasco and Lime juice. Which in itself was evolved from an even simpler cocktail of just vodka and tomato juice.

Why are Bloody Marys more Complicated Then Needs to Be?

Relatively simple not to mention balanced. Vodka gives it a kick, tomato juice adds that district savoury flavour, tabasco gives it the spice and lime juice helps balance the cocktail. Yet today, we have an array of ingredients from the niche and inaccessible, such as celery salt okay, sure, it taste great but you’re not going to get that from your local paper shop.

It makes recreating this classic at home very difficult. Which it doesn’t need to be. The best way to think about the Bloody Mary is that the base recipe should be simple and should stay relatively the same. Everything else is optional seasoning of the drink. And I believe that’s where this cocktails gone wrong. People began building on that base recipe to better season it, with additions that where either built around their own taste or local to where they were, after awhile people began to forget that the Bloody Mary is actually a simply cocktail with optional seasoning and began to believe that it’s just a complicated mix that if you can’t do right, don’t do at all.

Not to mention variations. Bloody Marys with gin aka the Red Snapper and Bloody Marys with Tequila aka the Bloody Maria should be as simple as the original, with the only change being that of the base spirit.

Easy Bloody Mary for Home Bartenders

This recipe that I’m sharing here is that of the most simply recipe and most favourited and easy to recreate seasoning. After that, you adjust the seasoning to fit your taste. Which is how it should be made.

So here’s how you do it, here’s how you create the best Bloody Mary ever, according to yourself.

The Original Bloody Mary

Ingredients

For the rim

  • Chili flakes

  • Flaked salt

Bloody Maria

A Bloody Maria is a Bloody Mary with Tequila. Use the same recipe as above but switch the 50ml of Vodka with 50ml of 100% blue weber agave Tequila Blanco. This will give a more earthy Bloody Mary. Goes great with extra spice, chili and lime garnishes. Try it with a splash of beetroot juice to build on that earthy savoury flavour in an interesting way.

Red Snapper

A Red Snapper is your Bloody Mary with Gin instead of Vodka. Similar to the Bloody Maria, use the same recipe as above but switch the vodka for gin. This is more of a botanical twist which works great with pickled garnishing and lemon juice in place of lime. I recommend using a London Dry Gin.
