Where to get the Equipment they use on the Great British Bake Off
Any budding baker or general British television binge watcher will be well aware of the Great British Bake Off. Whether you watch it just for the humour in seeing someone's baking dreams fall apart as a 2 tier cake begins to droop.
Or you’re actually really into baking and watch it for the tips, tricks and exciting new recipes. Either way there is probably a thought that has crossed your mind. Where do they get all that lovely equipment?
If that thought hasn’t crossed your mind. I bet it has now. The GBBO tent is filled with lovely cooking equipment, gear and appliances in a range of beautiful eye-catching pastel colours. Each individual section of the tent is a baker's dream kitchen.
Today, we are going to niche down and pick apart the main equipment used and not just tell you what it is and what brand is used. But where you can get it from at the best price. Meaning you can finally have that exact bake off aesthetic in your own home kitchen.
Or… use it to practise for when the time comes that you get the call to enter the tent for real. Could that be you? Are you a future bake off star? Only one way to find out. Let's get the equipment and start baking.
Where to buy the equipment seen in the Great British Bake Off and what brands are used
#1 KitchenAid Artisan stand mixer
The stand mixer is probably the most iconic appliance in the bake off tent. It's the one thing that is used in almost every episode and even when it's not used, it's always in view.
The fact that they are pastel coloured also stands out massively. Even if you have only watched one series of Bake Off. The fact it's always a similar looking mixer has been forever subliminally embedded in our heads.
So much so that most stand mixers now have an option for pastel colours. But there is only one official Bake off stand mixer, and that's the KitchenAid Artisan stand mixer.
In fact one year they tried changing to a Kenwood and there was actual outrage. Crazy I know. So the KitchenAid is a staple of bake off just as much as Paul Hollywood is.
Word on the street is that this is even Nigella Lawson's choice of Stand Mixer. That's a brag if I've ever heard one.
#2 Ice Cream Maker
$280 amazon.com (closest match)
The ice cream maker they use on The Great British Bake Off is the Magimix Gelato expert.
As seen on the image above and perked a lot of peoples interest during the season 13 pistachio ice cream challenge.
For american’s, you wont be able to get the magimix but you can get the next closest thing, the Whynter.
#3 Retro Style Freestanding fridge freezer
More of a larger appliance and a commitment to get is the retro Bake Off fridge freezer. However, for any kitchen inspired by GBBO this is a must.
You can't have that Bake Off feeling without running to a pastel retro freezer with a melting cake. It’s just a non-starter.
However, the fridge freezer used in Bake Off is less easier to find. Unlike the KitchenAid Stand Mixer which is always the same, the fridge freezer does actually change per season. But always to a similar look.
The one I would go with is the Amica FDR2213C which you can get in black, cream or red. It's of good quality and looks the same as what we see in Bake Off. Especially the red one. If you’re shopping from America, go for this mini fridge which has the closest look.
#4 The Microwave
$101.99 amazon.com (closest match)
The microwave is a weird one. It’s not necessarily the first thing you think of when you think about The Great British Bake Off.
It’s also not massively in-fitting with the rest of the theme. The whole bake off theme seems to be focused around retro and pastel. The microwave, which you can see above, take more of a dark coloured, Scandinavian theme.
It’s also relatively new. This microwave didn’t start being used till season 12/season 13.
However, its still a stunning microwave and it does get its fair share of use. Not as much as the KitchenAid stand mixer, no. But for chocolate and butter melting, absolutely it get’s its use.
And like I said, its stunning.
So the Microwave they use on The Great British Bake Off is the Swan 20L from the Nordic style range. Which is this one right here if you’re a UK shopper.
If you’re shopping from America, once again you can’t get this. But a great second option would be this one.
#5 Dualit Hand Mixer
This year's choice of hand mixer is the Dualit hand mixer, and believe me you. It's a good one. They use it in bake off for a reason after all. And not just because it looks good. This is a high quality mixer with powerful functionality.
Similar to the Amica FDR2213C freestanding fridge freezer, you can get this in red or cream but instead of black, this hand mixer has the option to buy in a much more subtle metallic look.
Either way, I find that this hand mixer is amazing value for money but just like the previous point, the hand mixer barely gets seen - unlike the KitchenAid stand mixer.
#6 Magimix Compact System 3200XL Food Processor
Another GBBO equipment essential has to be the Magimix food processor. I actually find this is less of a Bake Off equipment essential and more of just a kitchen essential. Not even just for bakering but for any kitchen need. Don't underestimate the power and versatility of a good mixer.
The brand of food processor that Bake Off use is the Magimix, and the one I have for you here is the compact system 3200XL which comes in a range of pastel and retro colours to complete you bake of appliance collection
#7 KitchenCraft Cake Tins set
Now we have some of the larger and more expensive appliances out the way. Let's have a look at the easier to get, sometimes overlooked, kitchen and Bake Off essentials.
Such as cake tins. You can’t begin your baking domination dreams without a good set of cake tins. They are an absolute essential and cheap to buy. It's a no brainer.
As for the ones Bake Off uses, I’m sure these look familiar… These are the KitchenCraft cake tin sets with a non-stick coating and loose fit bottom.
They also come with a 12 month warranty. Almost everything if not everything on this list does. I just thought I'd mention it in case you’re that one person breaking cake tins. Don’t think i’ve ever had a cake tin break, how would you even do that? Anyway here they are.
#8 Nordic Ware Heritage Bundt Pan
If you’re a keen Bake Off viewer or budding baker for that matter. This Bundt tin is an absolute dream. One sure way to make your bakes look jaw dropping is this tin. If you know, you know. And if you don't know, get to know. I’m just going to leave it there…
#9 Rayware Mason Mixing Bowl
A mixing bowl comes in handy when baking, more so than you might realise.
In The Great British Bake Off, the mixing bowl that catches attention more than those bland glass ones are these Mason Mixing Bowls.
Sure, they are a bit more expensive than the glass ones. But for any Bake Off or pastel inspired kitchen, these are a must. It’s the kind of bowl you leave out on display instead of shoving in the back of a cupboard. Furthermore, if you ever plan on being a baking YouTube star or blogger then you need this eye-catching bowl.
#10 KitchenCraft Cake Lifter
Another usually forgotten baking essential is the KitchenCraft Cake Lifter to lift and move your cakes. Remember all those dramatic episodes of bake off with someone trying to move a 3 tier cake onto their presentation block? That was done with this. The KitchenCraft Cake Lifter.
#11 Great British Bake Off Ted Baker Star Baker Apron
If you’re to complete your Bake Off kitchen aesthetic, there's going to be something very much essential needed. And that, of course, is the coveted star baker apron. Which thanks to stand up to cancer you can buy on Amazon whilst doing a bit of good for cancer research.
Unfortunately this is not available if you’re from outside the UK.
#12 Great British Bake Off Cookbook
Finally, now you have your kitchen sorted, you're going to need something to bake. So this may not be a “Bake Off Equipment” but it sure is needed. And that's a good cookbook. Here's Three options that include official Bake Off recipes.
