Crafts to better your Hot Chocolate Station
Winter is here, and there's nothing quite like the warmth of a mug filled with hot chocolate to chase away the chill. But why settle for a simple cup when you can create a Hot Chocolate Station that turns sipping into an experience? Let's dive into the world of hot chocolate crafting, where creativity meets comfort. I am of course speaking about Hot Chocolate bars - how to make them, create them, on or off a budget whether you call it hot cocoa or hot chocolate this is the guide for you!
What is a Hot Chocolate Station?
Imagine this: a corner filled with jars of marshmallows, chocolate shavings, and a selection of hot chocolate mixes. Your guests can customize their drinks, adding a touch of whimsy to their winter indulgence. It's not just a station; it's a winter wonderland of cocoa possibilities.
You can make these as large or small as you desire. Suitable for a party or small Christmas eve night with the family.
They also pair beautifully wearing cute Christmas outfits like these, cosied up enjoying a nice glass of hot cocoa. You could also serve your station a long side some mulled wine, mulled cider, eggnog or hot toddies to really dial in the Christmas feeling.
Essential Components of a Hot Chocolate Station
The Base: Quality Hot Chocolate Mix or Homemade Cocoa
Start with a good foundation. Whether you opt for a rich hot chocolate mix or decide to whip up a homemade cocoa blend, quality matters. Remember, the better the base, the more delightful the end result.
You can do this a couple of ways, the first is to have a basic powder base. Here’s my favourite;
For that, decant your hot chocolate powder in one of the jars (we’ll get to that soon) and have a kettle around so people can help themselves to as much or little as they want. We’ll also speak more about different base options shortly.
Another way is to start with a basic base. I use unsweetened cacao powder and I’ll tell you for why, It gives you the most room for creativity. You add the sweetness, so you can serve that along with difference flavoured syrups like these;
And you wont end up with an overly rich glass of hot chocolate. The sweetness will balance. Cacao powder on its own is, well, it’s gross. But once you add that sweetness it’s absolutely amazing. If you really want to treat yourself to a grown up hot cocoa with alcohol, check out this recipe for my ultimate boozy hot chocolate.
Coming up with that recipe I went through a whole lot of flavour combinations (what a hard life, aye?) but what I’ve ended with is absolutely close to godliness. I actually created that for my cocktails from scratch course that you can check out here.
It’s an online course walking you through every step of making cocktails from scratch. I have an add on for holiday drinks, for Christmas, I created that recipe. You can get a snippet of that recipe on YouTube here or below.
If you are interested in cocktails, do check out that course. If I do say so myself it’s the best online cocktail course ever. I also have a whole lesson on New Years Eve which you’ll want for seeing out the end of the year. It’s set on fire.
Pre make your hot chocolate
Another option is to have your hot chocolate station as the garnishing section. So you create the hot chocolates separately and your guests top them with whatever they want. I suppose a “Hot chocolate toppings bar” would be a better name for that.
This works great if you’re making hot chocolates with milk or if you’re making specific hot chocolates such as Boozy hot chocolates or flavored hot chocolates such as peppermint, hazelnut.
Or, if you plan on using a Velvetiser which creates the absolute best hot chocolate ever. We’ll also speak about this more because this needs it’s own section.
Variety Matters: Different Types of Milk and Non-Dairy Alternatives
Not everyone loves dairy, so why not cater to all tastes? Offer an array of milk options – from whole and almond to oat and soy. Your lactose-intolerant friends will thank you for the thoughtful variety.
I recommend pouring your milks into these cute milk bottles;
Just don’t forget to label them.
I’ve created a pack of downloadable hot chocolate station supplies that includes labels to help you out. Just print them off, cut out the ones you need and tie them to the necks of the bottles using twine or if you’re going for a Christmas vibe, use this string.
Toppings Galore: Whipped Cream, Marshmallows, Chocolate Shavings, and More
Here's where the fun truly begins. Whipped cream clouds, marshmallow mountains, and chocolate shavings – encourage your guests to get creative with their toppings. After all, it's not just a drink; it's a work of art.
Here are some ideas to get you started with what toppings should be included in your hot chocolate station;
Hot Chocolate Toppings Ideas
Candy canes
Crushed candy canes (blitz them in a blender so you can sprinkle on top)
Chocolate chips
Mini marshmallows
Cinnamon sticks
Whipped cream
Sprinkles
Caramel sauce
Chocolate syrup
Toffee bits
M&M’s
Chocolate-Dipped Pretzel Rods
Toasted Coconut Flakes
Chopped Reese’s Cups
Chopped Aero’s
Maltesers
Oreo Bits
One of the most important here will be squirty whipped cream. This will work as a base for all your toppings. So make sure you have a bottle on hand.
How to set up your toppings
For the toppings, pick up some jars. I’d always recommend different sized jars just because looks wise, it looks way better when you have all these different levels and trinkets rather then everything being uniform.
What you want to do is pick a selection of toppings from the above list (or any toppings you want), then fill some jars with said toppings. To go the extra mile, decorate your jars.
You could wrap tinsel around each jar for a more Christmassy look, or much like with the milk bottles. Wrap labels around your jars. Print these blank hot chocolate station labels off, name your jar and wrap them around each jar with festive twine.
Stirring Things Up: Candy Canes, Cinnamon Sticks, and Flavorful Spoons
Why settle for a plain stirrer when you can add a touch of flair? Provide candy canes for a peppermint twist, cinnamon sticks for a warm aroma, and flavorful spoons for an extra kick. Stirring has never been this fun!
Here’s a recipe by the American Patriette for chocolate spoons which work great for infusing more flavor into your hot chocolates.
Creating a Cozy Atmosphere
Festive Mugs and Glassware: Adding a Touch of Holiday Spirit
Presentation matters. Invest in festive mugs or glassware to elevate the experience. It's like wrapping your hands around a cup of holiday cheer. Here are a few of my favourite finds.
Seasonal Decor: Incorporating Christmas and Winter Elements
Turn your station into a visual delight with seasonal decor. Think twinkling lights, miniature trees, and maybe even a snow globe or two. It's not just a drink; it's a winter wonderland.
I usually start with a festive table cloth, then add my jars, milk, hot chocolate powders, a thermal carafe of hot water, stirrers, my mugs, then a few festive bits to really bring everything together.
And if you are crafty which I’m going to assume so. Why not craft your own decorations using this template.
If not, just print of some Christmas posters and hang them around your hot chocolate station. You can download these to print at home…
Don’t forget to complete the look by dressing the part.
And if it’s for a Christmas party, here’s some of my top outfit choices for men.
Outfit’s aside, make your Christmas party an complete affair by serving up some mulled wine, mulled cider, eggnog and hot toddies.
Warm Lighting: Enhancing the Ambiance for a Magical Experience
The right lighting can transform your station into a cozy retreat. Opt for warm, soft lights that create a magical ambiance. The best way to achieve this is just by wrapping your setting up in warm Christmas lights like these.
DIY Hot Chocolate Mix Recipes
Once you’ve got your toppings sorted. It’s time to figure out how you want to go about serving your hot chocolate.
The first way to go about this is by filling a thermal carafe with hot water, then having a few jars of different flavors and cocoa powders that can be self mixed for your own quality hot chocolate. Just fill a few small jars with different hot chocolate powders and let your guests help themselves to there favorites.
Classic Hot Chocolate Blend: A Nod to Tradition
There's a certain charm in sticking to tradition. A classic hot chocolate mix, made with premium cocoa powder, sugar, and a pinch of salt, sets the perfect nostalgic tone for your station.
Peppermint Twist: Infusing the Magic of Candy Canes
Take your taste buds on a journey with a peppermint-infused hot chocolate mix. Crushed candy canes add a refreshing twist that's perfect for the winter season.
Spiced Delight: Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and a Hint of Warmth
For those who love a bit of spice, a hot chocolate mix infused with cinnamon and nutmeg is a game-changer. It's like a hug for your taste buds.
For this, use the classic powder mix but have a few spices on hand that people can mix themselves. I recommend the classic 3
Ground Ginger
Ground Cinnamon
Nutmeg
White Chocolate Wonder: A Creamy and Elegant Option
Step into elegance with a white chocolate hot cocoa mix. Creamy, dreamy, and utterly sophisticated – a delightful choice for those looking to indulge.
Best flavored hot chocolate powder
Here are a few more options you might not of thought about which work great.
Velvetiser Hot Chocolate
Option 2 is to only use your hot chocolate station as a hot chocolate decoration station - A hot chocolate toppings bar.
For this option, you’re going to mix the hot chocolate station separately, then let your guests top them however they like.
This works perfect if your using a saucepan for your hot chocolate, or if you have some speciality gadget like a velvetiser. Hotel chocolat velvetisers make in my opinion, the best hot chocolate ever. So it makes sense if you want to just add a velvetiser to your bar and let people play with that.
If you’re going for this option, Hotel chocolat have boxes or mixed hot chocolate which work great.
Vegan Hot Chocolate and Lactose intolerant friendly options
We spoke briefly about having milk options above. But you always want to consider vegan and lactose intolerant options especially if you’re planning this for a kids party or wedding. In which case chances are someone will be vegan or lactose intolerant.
I recommend at least one milk substitute and vegan powder option. The below would be my favourites.
What is the temperature of hot chocolate
A good hot chocolate should be served between 160 degrees F (71.1 degrees C) and 185 degrees F (85 degrees C).

Colorful Sprinkles and Fun-shaped Marshmallows

Why stop at just sipping? Provide mini cookies for dunking. It's a delightful addition that adds a crunchy element to the creamy goodness of hot chocolate.
Hot Chocolate Art: Edible Paints and Whipped Cream Canvases
Encourage mini Picassos by adding edible paints to your station. Whipped cream becomes the canvas, and each cup turns into a delicious work of art. Creativity knows no age limit!
Hot Chocolate Station Trays
Adult Twist: Spiked Hot Chocolate Bar
For adult options, turn your hot chocolate bar into a proper hot chocolate bar and add a few choices of liqueurs and liquor for people to add.

Baileys
Orange liqueur
Coffee liqueur

The Ultimate Boozy Hot Chocolate Recipe
I’ve actually put quite a lot of thought into what makes a boozy hot chocolate good. Last year I teamed up with a production team half way across the world to create the ultimate course for making cocktails from scratch. During that course I have an add on lesson for Holiday drinks, one of those lessons is a Christmas cocktail lesson.
For that I spent weeks coming up with the best ever boozy hot chocolate recipe and this is what I came up with.
You can check the full course out for the full lesson, or get the recipe here. It’s an orange and coffee boozy hot chocolate with cinnamon and salt. You can steal that recipe, use it as your base and let people top it however they’d like.
You can also get a preview of that lesson and the full hot coco with alcohol recipe on YouTube which you can check out below.
Garnishes for Grown-Ups: Chocolate-covered Espresso Beans, Orange Zest, and Sea Salt

Turn your hot chocolate station into a family affair. Let each member create their perfect cup, fostering a sense of togetherness and shared joy.
Coordinating with Party Themes: Matching Decor to Festive Occasions
Hosting a themed party? Your hot chocolate station can play along. Coordinate decorations and toppings with your party theme, creating a cohesive and festive atmosphere.
For example. Maybe you’re hosting a Great Gatsby themed 20s party with Bugsy Malones and flapper girls. In which case you could decorate your hot chocolate station with gold tassels and champagne truffles.
Perhaps its a movie night inspired hot chocolate station. Did someone say Harry potter with chocolate frogs, hot cocoa and butter beer? Or maybe it’s even more niche then that. Maybe you’re throwing a Taylor Swift themed party. You’ve seen that we have downloadable party games and decorations for Taylor Swift, and you’re thinking “hmm, how can I incorporate a hot chocolate station”.
Simple. Print of some of the cake toppers and decorate your jars with them or give your toppings Taylor Swift themed names. So sprinkles become bejewels and cinnamon served to dust your whipped cream becomes “shake it on”.
Themed Party packs
As a side note, we also have more themed party packs. You can check them all out here but some of out favs are the music ones like these;
