Non-Alcoholic Old Fashioned
How to make a non-alcoholic Old Fashioned and a Tequila Old Fashioned completely alcohol free.
Jump to recipe
Making an non-alcoholic Old Fashioned sounds pretty impossible, Old Fashioneds are notoriously boozy drinks, leading to three main questions; Firstly, how do you make a cocktail which consists of 80% booze booze free? secondly, how would it taste like Bourbon? and lastly why would you even do it? if you’re not drinking, just don’t drink.
How to make an Old Fashioned Alcohol Free
To answer the first question, the how, the answer is relatively simple… by using non alcoholic distilled spirits of course. As for how to make it taste like bourbon, that’s where Lyre’s relatively new to the market non-alcoholic American malt substitutes come into play.
For this cocktail in particular I actually used the reposado substitute aptly named, ‘Lyre’s Agave Reserva Spirit’. for a Non alcoholic Tequila Cocktail. But the same applies with the American Malt.
Why have a non-alcoholic Old Fashioned?
As for why you would want this, it’s because Old Fashioneds are timeless, drinking an old fashioned is more then the delicious flavour you’re getting, its almost like drinking history. That’s something that shouldn’t be reserved simply for drinkers.
Furthermore, it’s not just about making an Old Fashioned suitable for the sober community. Old fashioneds are boozy, often I’ll want one on a night out, but I also don’t want to be pissed as a fart before the sun goes down. Having the option to still enjoy an Old Fashioned post meal or pre night out without going from 0 to 100 real quick is a great option to have.
I’m not sober yet I’ll drink more non-alcoholic old fashioneds then I would alcoholic old fashioneds. As for my favourite style of old fashioned, well, it has to be a tequila one…

Notes
For super low abv varations try adding a few dashes on Angostura bitters, orange bitters, or a mix of both, for added sweetness try with a bar spoon of sugar syrup or to take things even further, combine sugar syrup with earthy roots and barks to create an old fashioned style sugar syrup, use your old fashioned syrup sparingly for extra flavour addition to any old fashioned - alcoholic or not.In an old fashioned glass, mix the orange peel with Lyre’s Agave Reserva and fill with ice.
